  Indiana Schools Who Have Implemented

       4-Year High School Course Plans

and Are Willing to Answer Questions

Four-year high school course plans allow students to carefully plan their high school curriculum based on their career and postsecondary interests.  The four-year high school course plan should include:

1.  Career area(s) that interest the student

2.  Possible occupation(s)

3.  Postsecondary education plans

     -  4-yr college

     -  2-yr college

     -  apprenticeship program

     -  postsecondary vocational program

     -  occupational skill training in the military

     -  on-the-job training

4.  Possible postsecondary education campuses

5.  Courses the students will take each semester

(related to the student's interests and

     educational goals)

6.  Grades

7.  Semester & cumulative credits

FLEXIBLE PLAN:  By design, the four-year high school course plan is flexible in nature and should be updated each year as the student's interests and plans change.

UNDECIDED STUDENTS:  When a student's future plans are undecided, the four-year high school course plan should include a rigorous curriculum opening all career and educational pathways.

DIPLOMA PLUS:  Some schools introduce the idea of "Diploma Plus" to their students using the four-year high school course plan.  Students and parents are made aware that a high school diploma without additional education (secondary vocational or postsecondary) does not prepare students for a wide range of occupations, especially high skill - high demand jobs.  "Diploma Plus" asks each student to add a plus to their diploma to indicate how they are going to continue their education in a secondary vocational program or postsecondary education opportunity.  For example, diploma + 4-yr college, diploma + apprenticeship program, diploma + military, etc.

GUIDANCE PORTFOLIO:  Many schools include the four-year high school course plan in a Guidance Portfolio.  Click here for more information about guidance portfolios.
